Bast was one of the most popular goddesses of ancient Egypt. She is generally thought of as a domesticated cat goddess. However, she has origins rooted to the desert sand-cat and it was not until the New Kingdom that she became exclusively associated with the domesticated cat. Bast personified the playfulness, grace, affection, and the sensuality cunning of a cat.
Her name has the hieroglyph of a 'bas'-jar with the feminine ending of 't'. These jars were heavy perfume jars, often filled with expensive perfumes - they were very valuable in Egypt, Egyptians treasured bathing, hygiene, make-up and aromatic temple perfumes. Due to Bastet meaning "she of the ointment jar" she also became known also as a goddess of perfume, and was called the "perfumed protector."
